Escalating Clashes in Manipur

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with additional security measures in place to maintain law and order as the shutdown continues.

Imphal, April 21: On Tuesday, tensions flared at the Senapati–Kangpokpi border in Manipur as violent confrontations erupted between two tribal groups during a 72-hour shutdown initiated by the United Naga Council (UNC).

The unrest escalated at T. Khullen village along National Highway-2 (Imphal–Dimapur road) when local law enforcement attempted to dismantle roadblocks established by Naga volunteers enforcing the shutdown. This protest was sparked by the recent killings of two individuals in Ukhrul district on April 18.

Officials reported that the situation worsened when residents from the nearby Changoubung village joined the fray, resulting in stone-throwing between the opposing factions. Amid the turmoil, gunfire was heard, causing panic among the local population.

“Several shots were fired during the incident, but it remains unclear who was responsible for the gunfire,” an official stated, noting that the source of the shots has not been confirmed.

Witnesses indicated that the volunteers enforcing the shutdown faced significant resistance, which further escalated the tensions. Eyewitness accounts described clashes involving stone pelting from both sides, while the sound of gunfire added to the fear in the vicinity.

In response, the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) claimed that the unrest was incited by ongoing provocations and attempts by authorities to dismantle barricades set up by shutdown supporters. They also reported injuries among some volunteers and damage to property, although no official statistics have been provided.

Security forces were swiftly deployed to T. Khullen and along the affected section of NH-2 to restore order and prevent further violence. Officials confirmed that the situation has been stabilized, although tensions remain high in the area.

The three-day shutdown, which commenced at midnight on April 20, has severely disrupted daily life in Naga-dominated districts such as Ukhrul, Kamjong, Senapati, Noney, and Tamenglong. Vehicle movement has been restricted, and essential services have been impacted in various locations.

Authorities are actively monitoring the situation, implementing additional security measures to uphold law and order as the shutdown persists.
