Tensions Rise in Kokrajhar Following Police Shooting of Rape Suspect
Incident Overview
Kokrajhar, Jan 11: The atmosphere in Kokrajhar remained charged on Sunday after police shot and injured the main suspect in the rape of a mentally challenged woman during what officials termed an escape attempt while in custody.
Details of the Incident
As per police reports, the event unfolded near the Rani Ghuli area while Rafikul Islam was being transported from a secure location to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Kokrajhar. During a scheduled stop for a restroom break, the suspect allegedly seized a firearm from a police officer, attacked him, and attempted to flee.
In response, law enforcement fired at Islam, resulting in a gunshot wound to his waist. Additionally, two officers sustained injuries during the altercation.
Medical Response
Islam, who hails from Chapar in Dhubri district and works as a laborer for an Assam Agency construction firm, was initially taken to Kokrajhar RNB Civil Hospital for immediate treatment before being transferred to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital for further care.
Background of the Case
The suspect was arrested in connection with the alleged rape of an orphaned woman with mental health issues at a labor camp near Patharughat, within the jurisdiction of the Kokrajhar police station. Authorities reported that the woman, who frequently roams near roadsides, was reportedly enticed to a shack at the camp on Saturday, where the assault occurred. There were also attempts to conceal the crime, according to police.
Public Reaction
The incident has ignited significant public outrage, leading to large-scale protests throughout Kokrajhar. Protesters blocked roads, disrupted daily activities, and demanded severe penalties for the accused, with some advocating for capital punishment.
On Sunday, tensions escalated further as a 12-hour bandh was initiated at 6 am by the Kokrajhar District Committee of the World Hindu Federation, effectively paralyzing life in the Bodoland Territorial Region's headquarters. Shops, markets, and businesses were closed, public transport was minimal, and educational institutions along with private offices were impacted.
Government Response
In anticipation of potential law and order issues, the district administration enacted prohibitory measures under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, to avert any escalation of violence. Police are actively monitoring the situation as investigations into the incident continue.
