Tensions Rise in Kadapa: Community Clash Over Junction Naming Sparks Violence
Clashes Erupt Over Junction Naming Dispute
Kadapa: Following a protest and subsequent stone-throwing incident at Almas Pet junction, authorities have imposed prohibitory orders in the area, as reported by local police on Sunday.
The unrest was sparked by a disagreement over the naming of the junction; one group advocated for it to be named after Tipu Sultan, the historical ruler of Mysore, while another faction insisted on naming it after Lord Hanuman.
A police spokesperson indicated that tensions escalated near Almas Pet junction due to these conflicting demands, prompting the enforcement of Section 144 to maintain public order.
On Saturday, clashes erupted between the two groups, leading to stone pelting, which was quelled by police using non-lethal measures.
This naming dispute has been a recurring issue for over a decade.
Authorities have identified several individuals involved in the violence, and arrests are expected shortly.
In a joint press briefing, Kadapa District Collector Sridhar Cherukuri and Superintendent of Police Shelke Nachiket Vishwanath described the events as 'unfortunate' and accused certain elements of attempting to disrupt communal harmony.
They cautioned against the spread of misinformation on social media, which they believe is inciting fear among residents.
The police acted promptly to restore order following the clashes and have implemented robust security measures in the vicinity.
Legal cases have been filed under applicable laws concerning the disturbances.
Officials are actively working to promote unity and ensure a peaceful environment in the district, taking all necessary steps to prevent future incidents.
