Tensions Rise Between SP and Congress Over Seat Sharing in UP Elections

As the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections draw near, tensions are flaring between the Congress party and the Samajwadi Party over seat distribution within the 'India' coalition. A provocative poster in Lucknow claims '200 seats are our right,' featuring prominent Congress leaders. The SP, historically the coalition's main representative, is now facing challenges as Congress asserts its demands. With a deadline set for mid-November to finalize discussions, both parties must navigate their differences to present a united front against the BJP. This political tug-of-war raises questions about candidate viability and strategic positioning in the upcoming elections.

Emerging Tensions in Uttar Pradesh's Political Landscape

Lucknow - As the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections approach, tensions are escalating between the Congress party and the Samajwadi Party (SP) regarding seat allocation within the 'India' coalition. A poster spotted outside the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) office in Lucknow on Sunday boldly proclaimed, '200 seats are our right,' featuring images of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with the message, 'Trust in Rahul Gandhi.'

The Samajwadi Party has been the primary face of the 'India' coalition in Uttar Pradesh, contesting most seats in the previous assembly and the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, the Congress party's firm stance on seat distribution has reignited tensions between the two parties. Reports suggest that Congress has set a deadline to finalize seat-sharing discussions by mid-November. This public display in Lucknow indicates the significant challenge the 'India' coalition faces in maintaining balance while attempting to unite against the Bharatiya Janata Party in the upcoming elections.

On Saturday, Congress hinted that it has prepared a list of 175 to 200 seats. Rajendra Pal Gautam, in charge of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, stated that while a list of seats has been provided, the final agreement will be reached in a meeting with top leadership, and all party members will accept the decisions made by the senior leadership.

In response to the poster campaign, SP leader Dharmendra Singh emphasized that seat distribution in any coalition is not determined by posters. He remarked that whether it’s 200 seats or two, the decision rests with the top leadership, and a committee is responsible for determining which candidates will contest from which seats. Singh stressed that the real issue is not the number of seats but the candidates' chances of winning, advocating that each party should contest in areas where they have a genuine opportunity for victory.
