Tensions Rise as Teachers Protest for Job Regularization in Guwahati

Protests Escalate in Guwahati

Guwahati, Aug 15: The demonstration by teachers from the Jyoti Kendra Shiksha Karmi Santha took a dramatic turn when police intervened to prevent their march towards Khanapara, where they aimed to meet Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. These educators have been on an indefinite strike since July 23, advocating for the regularization of their jobs. They claimed that police used force against them, obstructing their opportunity to voice their concerns directly to the Chief Minister.

Three individuals involved in the protest suffered injuries and were subsequently transported to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for medical attention.

"We have been on strike since July 23. The government assured us of job regularization, yet no action has been taken. We have approached the Education Minister nearly seventy times, but each time, the issue is deferred to the Chief Minister. Just yesterday in Nalbari, the CM provided verbal assurances again, but we lack any formal written commitment. Instead of teaching in schools, we find ourselves here, protesting under harsh conditions without access to water or electricity," stated Rejaul Islam, the secretary of the Jyoti Kendra Shiksha Karmi Santha.

Islam emphasized that teachers from all over Assam have rallied together for this cause, and the state committee remains unified in their demands.

"If the Chief Minister is unable to meet with us, he should delegate an authorized representative to engage with us," he added.

Despite the tensions, the protesters managed to commemorate Independence Day by hoisting the national flag before attempting their march. While authorities have expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue, no formal discussions have been scheduled as of now.
