Tensions Rise After Drone Strike at Kuwait International Airport
Drone Attack Sparks Controversy
The recent drone strike that hit Kuwait International Airport has ignited a heated debate regarding accountability in the ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, involved what Kuwaiti officials referred to as "hostile drones" targeting a passenger terminal. This attack resulted in the death of one Indian national and left 63 others injured, including both travelers and airport staff. Notably, the airport had just reopened after being closed for several months due to the conflict that erupted on February 28.
Iran Refutes Claims Amid Rising Regional Tensions
Iran has categorically denied any involvement in the attack on the airport terminal. A spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated through the IRNA News Agency that no missiles were launched towards the passenger terminal. Instead, they suggested that the damage was due to a malfunction of a US-made Patriot missile system. While the IRGC admitted to targeting US Navy's 5th Fleet headquarters and other American military sites in the Gulf, they did not acknowledge Kuwait as a target.
US Accuses Iran of Targeting Civilian Areas
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has firmly dismissed Iran's assertions regarding the cause of the damage, labeling them as false. In a statement shared on social media, CENTCOM declared, "Iran's claim that it did not attack the passenger terminal at Kuwait International Airport is completely FALSE." They further emphasized that Iran conducted a deliberate and unjustified drone attack on the civilian airport. Kuwait's Defense Ministry reported intercepting and destroying numerous missiles and drones launched from Iran. Additionally, US military sources indicated that two Iranian missiles disintegrated before reaching Kuwait, while American forces successfully shot down several drones aimed at US personnel in the region.
Following the incident, Kuwait Airways resumed operations from a different terminal as the airport partially reopened. This escalation occurs amidst a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the US-Israeli coalition, which has faced multiple violations. In response to the attacks, the US military executed retaliatory strikes against an Iranian military control station located on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned these actions as aggressive and a breach of the ceasefire. The ongoing conflict has also become increasingly linked to the hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, with Iran asserting that any future ceasefire must address the violence in Lebanon, while US negotiations continue amid escalating regional instability.
