Imphal, Nov 1: New tensions have emerged in Manipur after three individuals from the Kuki community lost their lives during a reported gunfire exchange involving two unidentified armed factions at Kekru Naga village in the Noney district on Saturday.

Authorities confirmed the fatalities occurred in the gunfire incident at Kekru Naga village, located approximately eight kilometers from the Nungba Police Station. However, the identities of those involved and the events leading to the confrontation remain unclear.

The victims have been identified as Thanglensang Singson, Thangkhosei Haokip, and Lamminsang Kipgen.

Local reports indicate that tensions had been escalating in the vicinity for several days prior to the tragic event. Nevertheless, the specific factors that triggered the gunfire exchange are still unknown.

The killings have raised alarms regarding the security situation in the district, especially following a reported attack on Tazeikaiphun Naga village on October 29, where numerous homes and structures were allegedly set ablaze. However, no direct connection between these two incidents has been confirmed.

In response, the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the leading organization of the Kuki tribes, condemned the killings, asserting that members of the NSCN-IM and ZUF(K) were responsible. They further claimed that the deceased's bodies had been desecrated.

KIM criticized the authorities for not providing sufficient security to the vulnerable Kuki-Zo communities in Noney district, demanding accountability and immediate protective measures for civilians.

The allegations against NSCN-IM and ZUF(K) have not been independently verified, and law enforcement has yet to identify those accountable for the killings based on the available information.

This recent incident has intensified concerns regarding civilian safety in Noney district, where reports of village attacks and the recent gunfire exchange have exacerbated an already precarious security environment.

Further information regarding the sequence of events and any potential connections between the recent incidents is still awaited.
