Rising Unrest in Manipur

The situation in Manipur is once again becoming tense, particularly after a recent bomb explosion that resulted in the deaths of two children, prompting public outrage to spill onto the streets. During a torch rally held in Imphal, protests turned violent, leading to clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

Details of the Incident

On April 7, an explosion in the Tronglaobi area of Bishnupur district claimed the lives of two young children. Since this tragic event, protests have erupted across various regions of the valley. Reports indicate that on Monday night, a torch rally spanning approximately seven kilometers was organized from Mayai Lambi to Keishamthong.

Clashes Erupt During Rally

Tensions escalated during the rally when protesters attempted to advance and confronted security personnel. According to police reports, the demonstrators aimed to move towards Keisampat, which is located near the Lok Bhavan and the ruling party's state office, in violation of the curfew.

Police Response

To manage the situation, security forces deployed tear gas in the Keishamthong area. The police reported that protesters engaged in stone-pelting and used slingshots to launch iron pellets, posing a significant threat to the security forces.

Curfew Measures and Arrests

The administration has imposed restrictions on movement in five districts of the valley from 5 PM to 5 AM. Despite this, a large number of individuals took to the streets, exacerbating the situation. Notably, the Manipur police have arrested 19 individuals for violating the curfew and damaging public property, with arrests made in various areas of Imphal West.

Tributes for the Deceased

In Ukhrul district, candles were lit in memory of two civilians who lost their lives, with tributes paid for the victims of an ambush that occurred on April 18.

Ongoing Ethnic and Regional Tensions

Manipur has been grappling with ethnic and regional tensions for several months. Recent events have once again posed a challenge to the peace and order in the region. Experts warn that if the situation is not controlled swiftly, it could escalate further, significantly impacting daily life.
