Protests Erupt in Manipur

Imphal: Following the arrest of a leader from the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, protests erupted in Manipur, leading to heightened tensions over the weekend. Authorities imposed restrictions in five districts of the Imphal valley and suspended internet services in certain areas, according to police reports.

To maintain order, prohibitory measures were enforced in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching districts. Internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN, were halted in these regions.

Demonstrators set fire to tires and old furniture on roads in Kwakeithel and Uripok, demanding the leader's release. Clashes with security forces occurred in various locations throughout the state capital on Saturday night, with a bus being torched in Khurai Lamlong, Imphal East.

In response to the unrest, security was bolstered along routes leading to the Raj Bhavan, with additional central forces deployed.

The district magistrate of Imphal West issued a statement citing serious disturbances to public peace and safety due to the unlawful actions of certain groups. Consequently, gatherings of five or more individuals, as well as the possession of sticks, stones, firearms, or sharp objects, were prohibited under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

In Imphal East, residents were ordered to remain indoors from 10 PM on Saturday until further notice.

"Violent protests erupted following the arrest of the Arambai Tenggol leader. All necessary preventive measures are in effect," a police official stated.

Gunfire was reported in Kwakeithel, though it remains unclear who was responsible for the shots.

Protesters also surrounded the gate of Imphal airport at Tulihal, blocking access to prevent any attempts to transport the arrested leader out of the state.

In a symbolic act of protest, members of Arambai Tenggol doused themselves in petrol.
