Tensions Escalate Between Pakistan and Afghanistan Following University Attack

Recent reports indicate a resurgence of tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistan has once again launched attacks within Afghan territory, this time targeting a university. Afghan officials have accused the Pakistani military of conducting missile and mortar strikes in the Kunar province, resulting in at least seven fatalities and over 80 injuries, according to Afghan claims. Among the injured are women, children, university students, and professors. This incident has instilled fear and anger throughout the region. Afghan authorities report that the attack occurred in Asadabad, the capital of Kunar province, specifically targeting the Syed Jamaluddin Afghani University, which suffered significant damage, with around 30 students and professors reported injured.

The Afghan government has labeled this attack as a war crime, condemning it as a brutal act by Pakistan. They assert that targeting civilians and educational institutions is unacceptable under any circumstances. The Deputy Spokesperson for the Afghan government shared a post accusing Pakistan, stating that on April 27, 2024, the Pakistani military government once again shelled various areas in Asfabad and the Mangoi district of Kunar province. The bombardment began at 2:00 PM, deliberately hitting civilian homes, including the Syed Jamaluddin Afghani University. Seventy civilians were reported injured, including children and women, with four fatalities confirmed. The Afghan government strongly denounces these actions by the Pakistani military, emphasizing that deliberately targeting civilians and educational institutions constitutes a serious and unforgivable war crime.

This act is viewed as extremely cruel and provocative. In response, Pakistan has categorically denied all allegations from Afghanistan. The Pakistani Ministry of Information stated that their military only conducts precise operations against terrorist hideouts and does not target universities or civilian areas. Islamabad has accused Afghan media of spreading fake news, claiming that these allegations are aimed at protecting terrorist organizations. Pakistan has consistently accused Afghanistan of harboring groups like Tehrik-i-Taliban, which carry out attacks in Pakistan. Afghanistan, on the other hand, has repeatedly rejected these accusations, asserting that Pakistan is deflecting its internal issues onto Afghanistan.
