Tensions Escalate After Murder in Tamil Nadu's Poombarai Village

Murder Sparks Unrest in Poombarai

Tensions have surged in the hilly village of Poombarai, located near Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu, following the murder of a 26-year-old man over a dispute regarding grazing livestock. Another young man, aged 24, sustained serious injuries during the incident. Local residents have organized widespread protests demanding the immediate arrest of all individuals involved, leading to road blockades.

According to police reports, agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for the people in Poombarai. A conflict had been ongoing for several months between local farmers Raghu and Ramr. Allegations suggest that Ramr's horse frequently wandered into Raghu's fields.

The situation escalated into a violent confrontation when Raghu summoned Ramr (26) and his companion Prashant (24) to a field near Poombarai. During the ensuing argument, Raghu attacked both men with a sickle. Reports indicate that Ramr died at the scene, while Prashant was transported to a government hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Sources indicate that the accused and the victims belong to different communities, which has led to communal tensions in the area following the incident. It has been reported that Raghu surrendered to the police late at night; however, over 100 relatives and community members of the deceased claim he was not acting alone. Protesters assert that several of Raghu's associates were also involved in the attack.

On Friday morning, demonstrators blocked the main road connecting Poombarai to upper hilly villages like Mannavanur. Despite senior police officials arriving to initiate peace talks, the victim's family and protesters refused to end their demonstration, accusing the police of inaction and failing to conduct a thorough investigation.

To prevent further escalation, a heavy police presence has been deployed in Poombarai and surrounding areas.
