Tensions Erupt in Tevda Village Over Funeral Dispute
Conflict Erupts Over Funeral Practices
In Tevda village, located in the Amabeda region, tensions escalated surrounding the funeral of Chamra Ram, the father of the village sarpanch. Both the tribal and Christian communities engaged in property damage and violent clashes. To restore order, authorities imposed a curfew in the area. Reports from Chhattisgarh's Kanker district indicate incidents of vandalism and arson, as members of both communities took to the streets, resulting in a chaotic situation where a church was set ablaze and stones were thrown between the groups. This unrest reportedly followed the news of the burial of Charan Ram Salam, with the tribal community expressing concerns that the funeral did not adhere to their traditional customs, as the grieving family had previously converted to Christianity.
Protests and Legal Actions Follow
Following his death on December 16, the family conducted the burial on their private land within the village. This led to suspicions among the tribal community, prompting protests demanding the exhumation of the body. In response to these complaints, the executive magistrate ordered the body to be exhumed in accordance with legal provisions, which sparked further clashes. Police arrived at the scene to manage the situation after reports of the conflict emerged.
Injuries and Damage Reported
The incident resulted in injuries to over 20 police personnel, including Ashish Banchor, the additional superintendent of police from Antagarh. After receiving first aid, the injured officers were transported to medical facilities for further treatment. Additionally, property damage was reported during the unrest. Authorities have assured that all necessary legal procedures and follow-up actions will be implemented regarding the entire incident.
