Golaghat, April 9: Voting at the Merapani Kalyanpur polling station in Assam's Golaghat Assembly constituency faced a temporary halt on Thursday due to an incident of violence related to the elections, which created a tense atmosphere in the vicinity.

Local police and security forces were promptly dispatched to the scene after receiving alerts, successfully restoring order.

Authorities reported that two individuals, Savin Kurmi and Mukut Haloi, were taken into custody and subsequently required medical attention for injuries incurred during the altercation.

Reports indicate that the conflict involved Kurmi, a BJP booth president, and Haloi, a Congress worker. The clash occurred amidst the voting process, briefly disrupting what had been a smooth polling experience.

Witnesses noted that the situation escalated following a verbal dispute between the two men, resulting in mutual physical aggression.

This confrontation created a distressing environment for both voters and polling staff. The incident has sparked a blame game between the rival political factions.

A Congress representative claimed that the conflict initiated when the BJP leader confronted Haloi near a food distribution area set up for voters.

“Food was arranged approximately 100 meters from the polling station. Savin Kurmi approached and allegedly attacked Mukut Haloi, which escalated tensions and disrupted the polling atmosphere. We alerted the police immediately, and both individuals have since been taken for medical care,” stated the Congress worker.

Conversely, BJP supporters contended that the incident was instigated by actions from the Congress side. No immediate comments were available from party officials.

Officials confirmed that voting resumed without further issues once the situation was stabilized.
