Telegram Takes Legal Action Against Government's Ban

In response to the government's decision to temporarily block access to messaging platforms before the NEET UG re-test scheduled for June 21, Telegram has approached the Delhi High Court. This case was presented before a bench led by Justice Tejas Kharia, who agreed to hear the matter later today. The government's action follows the NEET UG paper leak controversy, which prompted the decision to conduct a re-examination for affected candidates. Officials are taking measures to prevent any security lapses prior to the exam.

Investigation into Paper Leak and Temporary Restrictions

The investigation into the paper leak was initially assigned to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). According to the agency, questions regarding the integrity of the exam arose when question papers were shared in PDF format on messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram before the exam. Authorities believe that this temporary restriction was implemented to prevent the spread of unauthorized materials related to the exam before the re-test. Telegram has now challenged the government's decision in the High Court, seeking relief.

NTA Supports the Government's Decision

The National Testing Agency (NTA) welcomed the government's decision, describing it as a step towards maintaining the integrity of the medical entrance exam. In a statement released after the decision, the NTA noted that the ban was imposed under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2020. This order restricts the use of Telegram until June 22 for a specified and limited time. The agency highlighted concerns raised in recent weeks regarding several Telegram channels that appeared to be linked to leaked exam papers and organized malpractices. Reports indicate that some channels were named "Paper Leaked NEET", "Re-NEET 2026", "Private Mafia", and "Ree NEET Mafiaa". This action was taken following information provided by the NTA and the Ministry of Education. Officials stated that this measure was essential to prevent the dissemination of misleading information and to thwart any attempts at malpractices during the upcoming re-examination. The NTA emphasized that this temporary ban would help ensure a fair and transparent examination process for candidates participating in the NEET re-test.
