Telangana CM Criticizes Central Government Over Rising National Debt
Concerns Over National Debt
On Thursday, A. Revanth Reddy, the Chief Minister of Telangana, directed criticism at the central government led by the National Democratic Alliance regarding the escalating national debt. He asserted that since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014, the country's debt has surged by ₹151 lakh crore over a span of 12 years. Addressing government teachers who recently returned from an international study program in Finland and Germany, Reddy claimed that the total national debt has now reached ₹201 lakh crore.
He pointed out that from independence until 2014, all previous prime ministers collectively borrowed ₹51 lakh crore, whereas the current prime minister's tenure from 2014 to 2026 has seen an increase of ₹151 lakh crore in debt.
The Chief Minister highlighted the achievements of former prime ministers, noting their contributions in laying railway tracks, constructing national highways, and providing essential services like electricity, education, irrigation, and drinking water to millions of villages. He questioned the central government's development initiatives, asking if the country has seen the establishment of new airports, railway lines, or major ports in the last 12 years. Reddy referenced a recent parliamentary response indicating that the national debt has now escalated to ₹201 lakh crore.
Call for Educational Reform
Reddy urged teachers and their organizations to commit to transforming the education sector within five years, expressing his intention to remain in office until 2034. He defended former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, asserting that they made significant contributions to the nation, despite facing criticism. He remarked that while minor incidents are often exaggerated as major victories, it is essential to remember that during previous Congress administrations, the country successfully defeated China and Pakistan in wars, and the partition of Pakistan led to the creation of Bangladesh.
