Teachers at Himachal Pradesh University Continue Protests for Autonomy

The Himachal Pradesh University Teachers’ Welfare Association (HPUTWA) has been actively pursuing its 'Save the University Campaign' for the 13th day in a row, organizing a significant sit-in outside the Vice-Chancellor's office on Monday. The educators voiced urgent demands aimed at preserving the university's autonomy, academic freedom, and institutional integrity, stressing the importance of reinforcing its independent identity and democratic operations.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar Negi emphasized that Himachal Pradesh University is more than just an administrative entity; it represents decades of dedication, research, and academic heritage. He stated, “The autonomy of the university is crucial for its effective and independent operation.”
Prof. Chandra Mohan Parshira pointed out that throughout its 56-year history, the university has made remarkable contributions to education and research. He remarked, “This legacy belongs to countless teachers, staff, and students. Knowledge cannot be quantified by a mere three-hour examination. Research is an ongoing process, and attempts to restrict autonomous institutions are unwarranted.”
Dr. Ankush Bhardwaj, Secretary of HPUTWA, reiterated that while teachers advocate for accountability and transparency, it should not compromise autonomy. “Decisions regarding the university should be made through democratic and institutional channels,” he asserted.
Joint Secretary Dr. Anjali Sharma added that autonomy is intrinsically linked to academic freedom in teaching, research, and decision-making. “Reforms should aim to enhance resources, laboratories, and infrastructure rather than diminish independent operations,” she stated.
HPUTWA President Prof. Nitin Vyas remarked that the ongoing campaign reflects the solidarity and dedication of the teaching staff towards the university. “This movement is not against any individual but is aimed at preserving the institution's dignity. We will continue this struggle in a peaceful and democratic manner,” he affirmed, expressing appreciation for the support from all teachers, staff, and students.
