Jorhat, June 20: A formal complaint has been lodged at the Titabor Police Station regarding the alleged physical assault of two eighth-grade students by a teacher at PM Shri Sankar Dev Middle English School.
The complaint names Gautam Kaushik Bora, the teacher accused of severely beating the students during school hours on Friday. This incident has raised alarm among parents and community members, who are questioning the behavior of an educator responsible for the welfare and learning of children.
According to one of the victims' parents, "The students were engaged in a discussion about a math problem when the teacher summoned them and began to hit them. They suffered injuries to their hands and backs. He later took them to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital but left before we could arrive or be informed."
The parents later approached the headmaster of the school, who promised to organize a meeting with guardians to address the situation and decide on the next steps.
"We returned to the school but were unable to locate him. Consequently, we filed a complaint at Titabor Police Station and met with the headmaster, who assured us that a meeting with guardians would be arranged," the parent added.
Families of the victims, along with student organizations, are calling for the immediate arrest of the teacher and a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Members of the All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam (AASAA) and the Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association (ATTSA) have condemned the alleged assault, emphasizing that such actions instill fear in students and hinder efforts to enhance educational participation among children from tea tribe backgrounds.
"We stand with the parents of the two students and vehemently denounce this incident. We have urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and take stringent legal measures, including the arrest of the accused teacher," stated a representative from these organizations.
Another representative expressed concern that such incidents could deter children from attending school, especially during a time when initiatives are being implemented to boost educational engagement.
"As we strive to encourage students from the tea tribe community to attend school regularly, incidents like this can drive children away from education. We demand a thorough investigation and appropriate action against the accused," the representative remarked.
As of now, the police have not released an official statement regarding the allegations, and further investigations are ongoing.
