Itanagar, Sept 28: The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, introduced the new logo, official T-shirt, medal, and mascot for the upcoming Tawang Marathon 2026. He emphasized that this high-altitude marathon serves as a platform to highlight the state's stunning Himalayan scenery, rich cultural heritage, and commitment to responsible tourism.
During the launch, Khandu also presented the official website and registration portal for the marathon, which is set to take place on October 24 at an elevation of approximately 10,000 feet, framed by the Eastern Himalayas, according to an official announcement.
Speaking to attendees at his office, Khandu expressed that the marathon is not just a race but a fusion of sports, the breathtaking beauty of Tawang, its cultural richness, and the hospitality of its residents.
"The Tawang Marathon was envisioned not merely as a competition but as a venue where sports intertwine with the grandeur of our Himalayan landscape, showcasing our culture and the warmth of our people on a global platform, while narrating Arunachal Pradesh's tale of responsible tourism," he stated.
Khandu noted that every aspect of the newly revealed identity encapsulates a unique facet of Tawang's narrative.
"The logo embodies the essence of the mountains and its inhabitants, while the mascot symbolizes Tawang's warmth. The finisher medal represents the determination needed to conquer the challenging altitude and terrain, and the official T-shirt will carry Tawang's story wherever the runners go," he added.
This marathon, organized by the state government in collaboration with the Indian Army, is anticipated to attract over 4,000 participants this year, including more than 200 elite runners from India, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Nepal.
Participants will include civilian runners, defense personnel, amateur athletes, and fitness enthusiasts.
The high-altitude course presents a unique endurance test, with the terrain, elevation, and weather necessitating thorough preparation. Runners are advised to arrive in Tawang two to three days prior to the event for acclimatization, bib collection, and medical advice, as stated in the announcement.
Preparations for the marathon encompass race operations, medical assistance, hydration, and aid stations, with local stakeholders and organizing authorities coordinating the logistics. Ensuring runner readiness, community involvement, and environmental protection will also be key focuses of the event.
The marathon is expected to significantly enhance sports tourism in the region. The influx of runners and their families could create new opportunities for local hotels, homestays, transport services, guides, and other businesses.
Additionally, the event will provide participants and visitors with a chance to immerse themselves in Tawang's Monpa traditions, explore its historic monastery, and enjoy local hospitality, thereby connecting the sporting event with the area's cultural and tourism offerings.
Khandu extended an invitation to runners, sports enthusiasts, and travelers from India and abroad to join in the fourth edition and experience the beauty of Tawang.
