Introduction to Tata's New Compact SUV

Tata Motors has announced its ambitious plans to introduce several new models by 2030, including a vehicle known as the Scarlet. This sub-4 meter SUV is expected to feature a boxy design and advanced off-road capabilities, drawing inspiration from the iconic Tata Sierra. The new compact SUV platform aims to position Tata competitively within the growing smaller SUV market.

Specifications of the Tata Scarlet

The Scarlet will utilize a monocoque chassis that can accommodate both internal combustion engines and electric powertrains. It is likely to be powered by either the Nexon’s 120Hp, 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine or the Curvv’s 125Hp, 1.2-liter direct injection turbo petrol engine. Additionally, a new naturally aspirated 1.5-liter engine, which will also power the Tata Sierra, may be included.

Electric Variant and Future Models

If Tata decides to offer an electric variant of the Scarlet, it may feature a similar QWD setup as seen in the Tata Harrier EV, with an AWD option available for specific variants. Furthermore, reports indicate that Tata is planning to launch two additional all-electric compact SUVs, codenamed Kuno and Terra, as part of its strategy to introduce two models in each segment—entry, mid, and high-level.

Pricing and Competition

According to industry insights, the Scarlet is expected to compete with popular models like the Mahindra Thar and Suzuki Jimny. Tata will need to decide between a monocoque chassis or a ladder-frame platform to enhance the vehicle's off-road capabilities.
