Tata Group Steps Up: Rs 1 Crore for Families Affected by Air India Flight 171 Tragedy

New Delhi: On Thursday, N. Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of Tata Group, announced a generous compensation of Rs 1 crore for each family affected by the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad.
In addition to this financial support, he confirmed that the Tata Group would also take care of medical expenses for the injured passengers, ensuring they receive comprehensive care.
Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow in his statement, saying, “Words cannot fully convey the sorrow we feel at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families mourning their losses and those who have been injured.”
He further mentioned that the Tata Group plans to assist in constructing a new hostel at B.J. Medical College as part of their commitment to support.
He emphasized, “We are committed to standing by the affected families and communities during this incredibly difficult period.”
Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, also shared his condolences, stating that the tragedy has caused “immense grief to countless families.”
He added, “This heartbreaking incident has brought profound sorrow to many, and our thoughts are with all who have lost loved ones today.”
The unfortunate event involved Air India Flight 171, which was en route from Ahmedabad to London, carrying 242 individuals, including ten crew members.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the flight took off from Runway 23 at 1:39 p.m. Shortly thereafter, it issued a MAYDAY distress call to Air Traffic Control, but no further communication was established.
The aircraft crashed just outside the airport perimeter, with thick black smoke visible at the site.
Captain Sumeet Sabharwal was in command of the flight, with First Officer Clive Kundar serving as co-pilot.
