Tampa International Airport's Pajama Ban: A Humorous Take on Travel Attire
Tampa International Airport's Bold Statement
On Thursday, Tampa International Airport (TPA), located in Hillsborough County, Florida, made headlines with a statement addressing the attire of travelers. The airport expressed its discontent with passengers wearing pajamas, declaring it was time to impose a ban. In a lengthy announcement, TPA shared a social media poster stating, "We've seen enough. We've had enough. It's time to ban pajamas at Tampa International Airport." The airport highlighted its previous success in banning Crocs, claiming to be the world’s first Crocs-free airport, and now aimed to tackle the issue of pajamas.
"After successfully banning Crocs and providing everyone with the unique experience of a Crocs-free airport, we now turn our attention to a larger issue: pajamas. At. The. Airport. In the middle of the day," the airport stated.
While acknowledging that this decision might disrupt some travelers, the airport encouraged individuals to have candid conversations with those who might be affected. "We understand this decision could be challenging for some. It’s time to have a tough talk with them. You can do this. We (and Phoebe) believe in you," the airport added. The appeal concluded with a rallying cry: "The madness stops today. The movement starts now. Help Tampa International Airport become the world's first Crocs-free and pajama-free airport. DO YOUR PART. SAY NO TO PAJAMAS AT TPA."
Was It All Just a Joke?
As the news spread, many began to believe that the airport had indeed banned pajamas. However, it was later revealed that the announcement was intended as a joke. Beau Zimmer, a spokesperson for the airport, explained to the media that the post was part of the airport’s playful social media persona, which has been cultivated since its early days on Twitter, now known as X. Zimmer noted, "Our regular social media followers just eat this stuff up. But obviously, this is all in fun, and we encourage our travelers to be comfortable.”
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy responded to the post with a GIF of actor John Krasinski from the TV show “The Office,” expressing his approval. Duffy has been advocating for passengers to dress more formally while flying as part of a civility campaign launched last November, dubbed “the Golden Age of Travel Starts with You.” The campaign aims to spark a nationwide dialogue on restoring courtesy and class to air travel.
Clarification from Tampa International Airport
In a follow-up statement, the airport clarified that the post about banning pajamas was meant to be humorous. "Today’s post about ‘banning’ pajamas was another playful nod to day-of-travel fashion debates," it stated. "We encourage our passengers to travel comfortably and appreciate our loyal followers who enjoy the online humor.” Zimmer mentioned that the airport's light-hearted online persona has been around for over a decade, originating from a young intern's playful tweets about rival sports teams.
Despite the clarification, social media was already buzzing with reactions. One user on X welcomed the pajama ban, stating, "I love this! Let's go back to the way it was in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s!" Another user questioned, "Are sweat pants considered pajamas?" A third user humorously remarked that airports are not venues for fashion shows but rather stressful transit zones where comfort is key.
Tampa International Airport's Continued Excellence
Recently, Tampa International Airport was once again recognized for its exceptional passenger experience, earning the top spot in the Airports Council International Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards for the third consecutive year. This accolade places TPA at the forefront among North American airports serving 15 to 25 million passengers annually. The ASQ Awards, known as the most comprehensive benchmarking program in the airport industry, assess traveler satisfaction through real-time surveys conducted during the passenger journey. In 2025, ACI collected over 700,000 surveys from travelers at more than 400 airports across 110 countries, evaluating 29 key performance indicators such as cleanliness, amenities, staff helpfulness, wayfinding, and security. Tampa International Airport achieved an impressive overall satisfaction score of 4.41 out of 5, solidifying its position as a leader in the Departing Airport category. This ranking highlights TPA’s commitment to providing a clean, welcoming, and stress-free travel experience.
