Tamil Nadu Political Tensions Rise Over Controversial Remarks by DMK Leader

Political Backlash in Tamil Nadu

Thanjavur/Chennai, August 4 - The ruling Tamil Ga Vetrik Kazhagam (TVK) in Tamil Nadu has intensified its protests against DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, filing complaints with both local police and the National Commission for Women (NCW) over allegedly offensive remarks made by him regarding a film actress. Following this, police in Thanjavur have taken Udhayanidhi into custody for questioning.

The controversial comments were reportedly made during a protest led by Udhayanidhi in Thanjavur near the 'Panagal Building' on Monday. The complaint alleges that during his speech on the Cauvery issue, while the crowd was chanting 'Trisha, Trisha', he responded with an obscene and double-meaning remark. The complainant accused him and officials from the DMK's IT wing of deliberately belittling women, causing mental distress to the actress and women in general, and intentionally spreading public unrest by sharing a two-minute and thirty-nine-second video of the incident on the social media platform 'X'.

Additionally, TVK's national spokesperson Pazha Selvakumar has lodged a formal complaint with the NCW in New Delhi, requesting the commission to issue a notice to Udhayanidhi for clarification and to instruct him to publicly apologize unconditionally. The DMK had organized the protest in Thanjavur to demand decisive action to uphold Tamil Nadu's rights regarding the Cauvery water-sharing issue. Following the controversial remarks, state government ministers and party leaders, including N Anand and Aadhav Arjun, condemned the DMK on 'X'.

They labeled Udhayanidhi's behavior as 'extremely disgusting', asserting that such actions reveal the 'mentality, political culture, and declining standards' of the DMK. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also targeted the DMK leader over this issue, with the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit's chief spokesperson Narayanan Tirupathi describing the comments as 'abhorrent, obscene, vulgar, and shameful', calling for Udhayanidhi's arrest.
