Majority of Tamil Nadu MPs Opt Out of Delimitation Meeting

On Saturday, a significant number of MPs from Tamil Nadu decided not to attend an all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister C. Vijay Joseph. This meeting was organized to discuss the contentious issue of delimitation, which many view as a symbolic setback for the Chief Minister. Reports indicate that the meeting aimed to establish a unified stance from the state regarding the proposed delimitation process, amid concerns that it could reduce the number of parliamentary seats allocated to southern states.

According to reports, out of the 57 MPs from Tamil Nadu, only 20 were expected to attend the meeting, while 37 chose to stay away. This lack of participation suggests a lack of consensus regarding the Chief Minister's initiative. The attendees primarily included members from the Congress party and its smaller allies, with 12 Congress MPs present, along with two each from VCK, CPI, and CPI(M), and one each from MDMK and IUML.

In contrast, the DMK completely boycotted the meeting, with all 30 of its MPs absent. The AIADMK also distanced itself from the event, with four of its MPs not attending. Additionally, PMK, MNM, and DMDK joined the boycott, with one MP from each party opting out. Those who did not attend accused the TVK-led government of attempting to divert attention from the ongoing issues surrounding the Cauvery water sharing.

This meeting comes at a time when there are renewed efforts from the government to pass the bill, with speculation that it may be reintroduced in the upcoming monsoon session.
