Tamil Nadu Launches Special Voter Registration Camps: What You Need to Know
Voter Registration Initiative in Tamil Nadu
In Chennai, Tamil Nadu is hosting special voter registration camps over two days, starting Saturday, as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.
This initiative follows a comprehensive revision effort that has led to the removal of a substantial number of names from the state's voter registry.
Official statistics indicate that approximately 97.37 lakh names have been eliminated from the electoral rolls during this revision process in Tamil Nadu.
Consequently, the total count of registered voters in the state has dropped to around 5.43 crore.
The primary goal of this revision is to enhance the accuracy of the voter database by eliminating duplicate, deceased, or ineligible entries.
The process for adding new names to the voter list commenced on December 19.
Previously, special registration camps were organized on December 27 and 28 at nearly 75,000 polling booths statewide, allowing eligible citizens to apply for inclusion or correction of their details.
Officials have reported a positive response thus far, with 7.37 lakh individuals applying to have their names added to the electoral rolls, while 9,535 requests have been made for name deletions.
To maximize outreach and participation, additional special camps are being held today and tomorrow at all polling booths across Tamil Nadu.
Election officials are encouraging eligible citizens to take advantage of this opportunity, especially those who have recently turned 18 or whose names were removed during the revision.
Individuals who turned 18 on January 1 of this year, along with those whose names were deleted during the SIR, are advised to submit Form 6 for inclusion in the voter list.
Officials have also shared the upcoming timeline for the revision process.
Special correction camps will take place on January 18, allowing voters to request changes in the draft electoral rolls. The final voter list is set to be published on February 17.
The Election Department has emphasized the importance of maintaining an accurate and current voter list for ensuring free and fair elections, urging all eligible citizens to actively engage in the revision process and verify their electoral information within the designated timelines.
