Tamil Nadu Government Supports Chess Star R Vaishali with Financial Aid
Financial Assistance for R Vaishali
Today, Aadhav Arjuna, the Minister for Public Works and Sports, awarded a cheque of Rs 10 lakh to R Vaishali, a grandmaster and chess player from Tamil Nadu, at the Nehru Indoor Stadium. This financial support is aimed at assisting her participation in international chess competitions, as stated by the Tamil Nadu Sports Ministry.
R Vaishali's Achievements
R Vaishali, who is the younger sibling of Indian grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa, recently secured the FIDE Women's Candidates title by defeating Kateryna Lagno in the final round at the FIDE Candidates 2026 held in Cyprus. The 24-year-old has now earned her spot in the upcoming Women's World Championship match against reigning champion Ju Wenjun later this year.
Government Initiatives for Athletes
Minister Aadhav Arjuna emphasized that the Tamil Nadu government is implementing various initiatives to support athletes in their quest for medals at international competitions. He mentioned that talented athletes are being recognized and provided with tailored support for their training and competitive needs.
"We are undertaking several initiatives to ensure that sportspersons from Tamil Nadu can achieve success on global platforms. Specifically, we are identifying talented athletes and offering them the necessary assistance for their sporting endeavors," stated the Tamil Nadu Sports Minister.
Champions Development Scheme (CDS)
Under the Champions Development Scheme (CDS), national-level gold medallists under the age of 20 can receive financial support of up to Rs 4 lakh annually. This funding is intended for equipment, uniforms, overseas training, and exposure to international competitions.
"The CDS provides selected national-level gold medal winners under 20 with need-based assistance of up to Rs 4 lakh per year. This financial aid covers expenses such as sports uniforms, equipment, overseas training, and participation in competitions abroad," Aadhav Arjuna explained.
Mission International Medal Scheme (MIMS)
Additionally, the Mission International Medal Scheme (MIMS) offers financial support of up to Rs 12 lakh per year to athletes with the potential to win medals at international events. This funding is aimed at facilitating training, equipment purchases, and participation in global competitions.
"Through the MIMS, athletes who show promise for winning medals at international competitions receive financial assistance of up to Rs 12 lakh annually. This support helps with the acquisition of sports equipment, training abroad, and participation in international events," added Aadhav Arjuna.
