Voting in Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections


Chennai: On Thursday, voting commenced across all 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, with a reported voter turnout of 37.56% by 11 am.


The electoral contest is primarily between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance, with Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) and actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) intensifying the competition.


As per the Election Commission, there are 4,023 candidates vying for votes, with over 5.73 crore eligible voters set to determine the state's political future.


Polling started early in the day under stringent security measures, and officials noted a consistent voter turnout across various districts. By 11 am, Tamil Nadu's voter turnout was recorded at 37.56%, showcasing a robust polling trend in numerous areas.


Election officials are diligently overseeing the voting process to ensure it remains smooth and peaceful throughout the day.


Several notable political figures and public personalities cast their votes during the morning. Thol. Thirumavalavan, leader of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), voted at a government school polling station in Anganur, located in the Kunnam Assembly constituency of Ariyalur district.


K. Sasikala, the former general secretary of AIADMK, exercised her voting rights at Stella Maris College in Chennai. After voting, she referred to the election as a 'festival of democracy' and encouraged citizens across Tamil Nadu to participate actively in the voting process.


G.K. Vasan, president of the Tamil Maanila Congress, also cast his vote at a Corporation School polling booth in Alwarpet, Chennai, reflecting the enthusiasm among both voters and leaders.


In the Vanur constituency, VCK MP D. Ravikumar voted at a polling station in Morattandi.


Among the celebrities, actress Trisha Krishnan voted at a polling location in Alwarpet, Chennai, accompanied by her mother. When asked about her expectations for the election, she chose not to comment politically but urged citizens to participate in the democratic process, emphasizing its importance.


With consistent turnout and active engagement from voters and prominent figures, Tamil Nadu is experiencing a lively democratic exercise. Polling will continue until the evening, with officials anticipating an increase in turnout percentages as the day unfolds.
