Tamil Nadu CM Criticizes Arrest of Opposition Leaders During Protest

Chief Minister's Condemnation of Arrests

On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister Vijay expressed strong disapproval regarding the detention of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and other political figures outside the Prime Minister's residence during a protest. He labeled the central government's actions as an affront to democracy.

In a statement, CM Vijay condemned the arrest of Gandhi, who had come to support protesting students. He also voiced his party's backing for the opposition's protests in Parliament concerning the events of Monday. Reiterating his party's stance on the NEET entrance exam, he affirmed that the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) is committed to abolishing this examination entirely. He argued that the negative impact of this exam extends beyond students to their families as well.

Call for Abolishment of NEET

He emphasized that the NEET exam must be completely abolished, stating that this is the only viable solution to the issue. Furthermore, he assured that the party would not engage in false promises for electoral gain regarding this matter. Advocating for structural reforms, CM Vijay argued that education should be returned to the state list and insisted that eliminating exams like NEET is the only sustainable solution. Until constitutional changes occur, he proposed creating a special concurrent list to grant state governments more authority over education, including medical admissions.

TVK's Established Position

The Chief Minister noted that the TVK had adopted this position right after its formation, and the party has already outlined both permanent and interim solutions. He urged the central government to respect the sentiments of students and the general public by completely abolishing the exam.
