Chennai, May 13: Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay of Tamil Nadu has successfully navigated a significant challenge for his newly established Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government by securing a confidence vote in the Legislative Assembly, garnering 144 votes in support.
In contrast, 22 MLAs opposed the motion, while five chose to abstain from voting.
After the trust vote concluded, the Assembly was adjourned indefinitely.
The session was marked by intense moments, including a walkout by the DMK, visible rifts within the AIADMK, and heated exchanges between opposing factions.
Prior to the voting, Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of Opposition, led DMK members out of the Assembly, sharply criticizing the Vijay administration during the confidence motion debate.
Stalin accused the Chief Minister of fostering political defections by meeting with rebel AIADMK legislators earlier that day.
He raised concerns about whether Tamil Nadu was experiencing a 'change or exchange' in its political landscape, alleging that the TVK government lacked a stable majority and was relying on external support and defections to survive.
The atmosphere in the Assembly became charged when AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami declared that all 47 MLAs from his faction would oppose the confidence motion.
Palaniswami also criticized Vijay’s meeting with rebel AIADMK leaders, questioning the validity of their support for the government.
Disruption ensued after Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar invited rebel AIADMK leader S.P. Velumani to speak during the trust motion debate.
Members loyal to Palaniswami protested vehemently, but the Speaker asserted his right to allow any member to address the House.
Despite the uproar from the AIADMK benches, Velumani spoke to the Assembly and subsequently led the rebel MLAs in voting in favor of the TVK government, highlighting the growing divide within the opposition party.
In his response to the debate before the vote, Chief Minister Vijay emphasized that his government would uphold secular values and focus on effective governance. He remarked, 'This government will operate with the speed of a horse and will not engage in horse trading,' a pointed jab at the opposition.
Vijay also reassured the Assembly that all significant welfare initiatives from previous administrations would continue under the TVK government.
