Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections: ECI Orders Key Police Transfer to Ensure Fairness
Election Commission Takes Action Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections
Chennai: As the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach, with only five days left, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has mandated the immediate transfer of senior IPS officer KA Senthil Velan from his role as Inspector General of Police (Intelligence). Avinash Kumar has been appointed to take over this position.
In an order released on Sunday, the ECI emphasized the importance of maintaining administrative neutrality and efficiency as the election date nears. Avinash Kumar, who belongs to the 2004 IPS batch, is now tasked with the responsibilities of the new IG (Intelligence).
The directive, signed by ECI Secretary Madhusudan Gupta, is part of the Commission's ongoing efforts to ensure a fair electoral process. The Tamil Nadu government has been instructed to provide a compliance report confirming Avinash Kumar's new role by 5:00 PM on Sunday.
Additionally, the ECI has specified that KA Senthil Velan should not engage in any election-related duties until the electoral process concludes.
This order was communicated to the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, with a copy sent to the Chief Electoral Officer, highlighting the urgency for immediate action.
Sources suggest that such last-minute administrative changes are typical during election seasons, as the Commission fulfills its constitutional duty to oversee free and fair elections. Transfers of officials in sensitive roles, particularly in intelligence and law enforcement, are common to prevent any potential bias or influence on the electoral process.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are set for April 23, with campaigning intensifying as major political parties and alliances ramp up their efforts across various constituencies.
The ECI is actively monitoring the state's preparedness, including law enforcement and administrative frameworks, to ensure that the polling process is conducted transparently and impartially.
The directive issued on Sunday is viewed as part of a broader strategy to enhance voter confidence and uphold democratic principles.
Further administrative changes may occur as the Commission continues its evaluations in the days leading up to the elections.
