Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections: AIADMK's Strategic Seat-Sharing Moves Ahead of Nominations
AIADMK's Preparations for Upcoming Elections
Chennai: With the Assembly elections approaching, the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is rapidly finalizing its seat-sharing agreements, as the nomination period is set to commence soon.
The nomination process will open on March 30 and conclude on April 6. Recent intense negotiations have propelled discussions into their concluding stages, with significant decisions anticipated shortly.
Insiders from the alliance indicate that the AIADMK is determined to claim the majority of seats, aiming to independently achieve a governing majority.
This strategy appears to be a calculated move to strengthen its core voter base while also considering its allies in specific constituencies. The groundwork for this arrangement was reportedly established during AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s recent trip to New Delhi, where he engaged with senior BJP officials. These discussions are believed to have clarified the seat distribution among alliance members.
Reports suggest that the AIADMK plans to contest approximately 160 to 170 seats out of the total 234 constituencies. By maintaining a substantial number of seats, the party aims to surpass the halfway mark of 118 seats independently and form a government with minimal reliance on allies.
According to the emerging seat-sharing plan, the BJP is expected to contest around 30 constituencies, an increase from the 20 seats it contested in the previous Assembly elections in 2021.
The PMK, under Anbumani Ramadoss, is likely to receive about 17 seats. The AMMK, led by T.T.V. Dhinakaran, which has recently joined the alliance, may be allocated around nine seats. The Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), headed by former Union Minister G.K. Vasan, is anticipated to get three seats.
Additionally, smaller alliance partners may contest under either the AIADMK’s ‘two leaves’ symbol or the BJP’s ‘lotus’ symbol, depending on the final agreement.
Senior BJP leaders have noted that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is actively managing the negotiations to facilitate a smooth consensus among the allies.
Following discussions with key stakeholders in New Delhi, attention has now shifted to Chennai, where the final details of the alliance are expected to be finalized.
The results from the 2021 Assembly elections serve as a crucial reference for the alliance’s current strategy. Although the AIADMK emerged as the main opposition party, its diminished seat count then has led to a more assertive approach to seat-sharing this time around.
Meanwhile, changes within the PMK and the inclusion of new partners like the AMMK have introduced new dynamics, making the upcoming electoral battle more intricate and closely monitored.
