Tahir Hussain Seeks Interim Bail for Medical Reasons Amid Ongoing Legal Troubles

Former councilor of the Aam Aadmi Party, Tahir Hussain, has submitted a plea for a one-month interim bail to a local court, citing medical reasons. In his application, Hussain has mentioned the need for surgery and subsequent medical care.

Hussain has requested bail from March 20 to April 20 in connection with a case related to the riots in northeast Delhi in 2020, as presented in front of Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai.

He has been in judicial custody since April 6, 2020. The application filed by Hussain's lawyer states, 'The applicant (Hussain) is seeking interim bail due to a hernia condition that requires immediate surgery.'

Previously, in 2025, Hussain was released on parole to campaign for the Delhi Assembly elections.

However, his recent regular bail application was rejected on January 29, 2026. The court has scheduled a hearing for his plea on March 19. The communal riots in northeast Delhi in February 2020 resulted in the deaths of 53 individuals and left over 700 injured. Hussain is among 20 individuals, including activist Sharjeel Imam, Khalid Saifi, and former Jawaharlal Nehru University student Umar Khalid, accused of allegedly conspiring to incite the riots. The Special Branch of the Delhi Police is investigating the entire matter.
