T Dilip Concludes Tenure as India Fielding Coach
T Dilip's nearly five-year tenure as the fielding coach for the Indian cricket team has concluded following their recent tour of England. In an interview with JioStar, he discussed Virat Kohli's exceptional skills as a fielder and highlighted the critical aspects of slip fielding as India prepares for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Kohli is widely regarded as one of the top fielders in Indian cricket history, holding the record for the most catches by an Indian in international cricket, with over 336 catches, surpassing the previous record held by Rahul Dravid. Additionally, he is the leading catcher for India in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), having eclipsed Mohammad Azharuddin's long-standing record of 156 catches.
'Intensity is Key': Dilip on Kohli's Fielding Influence
Dilip emphasized Kohli's role as a source of inspiration for his teammates, stating, "With Virat Kohli, intensity is non-negotiable. His performance during powerplays, whether at cover or short mid-wicket, showcases his remarkable reflexes and diving ability. Even in the recent series, he displayed his agility and commitment, always ready to dive and make plays. At this stage in his career, he continues to sprint from long-on to long-on during the death overs and is quick to exit the circle when the field is spread, which is commendable for the team."
He further noted, "What stands out is not just his actions when the ball is near him, but also his eagerness to be involved even when it isn't. There’s little distinction between his practice sessions and matches; his presence pushes the other five players to elevate their fielding standards."
Kohli's Transition to ODI Format
Currently, Kohli is focusing solely on ODIs after retiring from T20Is following the 2024 T20 World Cup and stepping away from Test cricket in May 2025, marking the end of his 14-year red-ball career. The Indian cricket team is set to face Sri Lanka in a series of Test matches, commencing on August 15 in Galle, with the second Test scheduled for August 23 in Colombo.
Analyzing Slip Fielding for the Sri Lanka Tour
Regarding the significance of slip fielding ahead of the Test series in Sri Lanka, Dilip remarked, "The spacing between fielders in the slips must be precise, as the ball travels quickly in that area when fielding against fast bowlers. There’s often little time to move laterally."
He added, "For spinners, we observed how Shubman positioned himself during the Afghanistan series. It’s crucial to determine the gap between the wicketkeeper and slip to effectively catch finer edges that may go to the left. Additionally, understanding the turn and speed of the ball will dictate how far back or close one should stand to the batter."
