A Historic Moment for West Bengal

Today marked a significant milestone for West Bengal as Suvendu Adhikari took the oath of office as the state's first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The ceremony was officiated by Governor R.N. Ravi at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Adhikari succeeds Mamata Banerjee, who held the position for 15 years since 2011. The event was graced by prominent figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several senior leaders from the BJP.

Among the notable attendees were Chief Ministers Yogi Adityanath from Uttar Pradesh, Pushkar Singh Dhami from Uttarakhand, Conrad Sangma from Meghalaya, N. Chandrababu Naidu from Andhra Pradesh, Bhupendra Patel from Gujarat, and Samrat Chaudhary from Bihar. Union Ministers Ram Mohan Naidu, Dharmendra Pradhan, and Jayant Chaudhary were also present.

Suvendu Adhikari has made it clear that his governance will not mirror that of his predecessor, Mamata Banerjee, who often centralized decision-making. Instead, he emphasized a leadership style based on 'collective governance,' stating that the administration will be a collaborative effort rather than an individual endeavor. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining smooth relations and coordination between the state and central governments.

It is noteworthy that Adhikari played a pivotal role in the Nandigram movement led by the Trinamool Congress, which was instrumental in ending the 24-year rule of the Left Front and ushering in the TMC government. However, after differences arose in 2019, he left the TMC in 2021 and subsequently led the BJP against the government he once closely allied with.

Emotional Moments at the Oath Ceremony

The oath-taking ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter in West Bengal's political landscape, filled with emotional and heartfelt moments. Immediately after taking the oath, Adhikari greeted the veteran leaders present on stage. He first sought the blessings of Prime Minister Modi by touching his feet, to which Modi responded warmly with a hug and best wishes for a successful tenure.

A memorable moment occurred when Adhikari approached Yogi Adityanath, who removed his saffron scarf and lovingly draped it over him. This gesture was perceived not merely as a piece of clothing but as a 'special gift' symbolizing unwavering support. As various leaders congratulated the new Chief Minister, the affection shown by PM Modi and the unique gesture from Yogi Adityanath became a focal point of discussion.
