Residents and officials are questioning whether this incident is part of a scientific study or a covert attempt to spy on a significant Indian naval facility. The bird was found in proximity to sensitive areas of the Indian Navy.

Location of the Incident

The incident occurred along the coastline of Karwar, specifically near the Thimakka Garden area. Locals spotted a marine bird that appeared unusual, particularly due to the device attached to its back. Their suspicions led them to notify the marine wildlife department, which promptly dispatched officials to the scene to safely capture the bird for further investigation.

Findings During Investigation

During the investigation, officials discovered that the device attached to the bird was a GPS tracker. Upon closer inspection, they noted the inscription 'Chinese Academy of Sciences' on the device. Additionally, an email address linked to the tracker was found, along with a message requesting anyone who located the bird to contact the provided email. Wildlife and marine authorities indicated that such GPS devices are typically used for monitoring wildlife activities, feeding habits, and migratory routes.

Concerns Over Espionage

Despite explanations provided during the investigation, doubts linger regarding the incident's nature. The bird was located near the strategically significant Kadamba naval base of the Indian Navy along the Arabian Sea coast. This proximity has led some local sources and observers to suspect that the bird may have been used for gathering intelligence or reconnaissance around the naval base. Previous incidents have heightened these concerns; for instance, a hawk equipped with a GPS device was reportedly found near the same naval base last November.
