Sivasagar, Sept 5: The discovery of two young men's bodies in a drain in Assam's Sivasagar district has raised alarms and led to protests, with a student organization demanding police action within 24 hours.
The deceased have been identified as Abhya Hazarika, 21, from Baliyaghat, and 23-year-old Manas Das. Their bodies were found near National Highway 37 at Betbari Dichang Majgaon.
The Scheduled Caste Students' Union of Sivasagar has called for accountability, insisting that if foul play is confirmed, those responsible must be identified and prosecuted.
Reports indicate that Das and Hazarika had ridden a motorcycle to Dhekiakhowa Bor Namghar on Friday.
Authorities arrived at the scene following the recovery of the bodies and have initiated an investigation into the events leading to their deaths.
The emergence of the second body has shifted the initial perspective on the case, according to Paresh Das, a representative of the Scheduled Caste Students' Union.
“Initially, we believed that Abhoy Hazarika's death was an isolated incident, possibly involving three friends who accompanied him to Dhekiakhowa Namghor. However, the discovery of the second body necessitates a broader investigation,” he stated.
Das also mentioned that Manas Das was reportedly involved with a local woman, urging investigators to explore all potential leads.
In response to the grim discovery, members of the student union and local residents organized a road blockade, demanding prompt action against those responsible.
The protesters have given the Sivasagar district administration and police a 24-hour deadline to resolve the case and take necessary actions.
“We condemn this incident and expect the Sivasagar district authorities to act within 24 hours,” Das remarked, noting that the administration has promised a thorough investigation and timely action.
After receiving assurances from law enforcement and district officials, the protesters temporarily lifted the blockade.
The recovery of both bodies from the same drain has sparked speculation regarding a possible link between the two deaths, although police have yet to clarify the circumstances or confirm any foul play.
