Suryansh Shedge Reflects on Learning from Ricky Ponting Ahead of IPL 2026
A Unique Learning Experience with Ricky Ponting
For the young all-rounder from Mumbai, Suryansh Shedge, the chance to share a dressing room with Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting transcends mere IPL participation; it represents a profound lesson in leadership, mindset, and the temperament required for high-stakes matches. As he prepares for the upcoming IPL 2026 season with Punjab Kings, the 23-year-old reminisces about how a seemingly simple first encounter during a pre-season camp in Dharamshala evolved into a pivotal learning opportunity under the guidance of a two-time World Cup champion.
"During our initial pre-season camp in Dharamshala, I found myself sitting in the back seat while he was in front of me. That was my first introduction to him," Shedge shared. "You can sense the presence of someone who has achieved so much in the sport, and it’s inspiring to be in the company of such wisdom for the first time."
The Impact of Ponting's Leadership on Punjab Kings
Ponting's return as the head coach of Punjab Kings for a consecutive season has bolstered the team's confidence following a transformative 2025 season that culminated in a final appearance. Shedge expressed gratitude and ambition, stating, "I had numerous discussions with him, and I learned a great deal. This year, we aim to build on our previous success."
The 2025 season marked a significant turning point for Punjab Kings. The collaboration between Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer, who previously worked together at Delhi Capitals, redefined the franchise's identity. The team, once struggling, transformed into fearless contenders, driven by clear roles and cohesive leadership.
Synergy Between Coach and Captain
Shedge, who has also played under Iyer in Mumbai cricket, believes that the synergy between the coach and captain is crucial to Punjab's revival. "They complement each other exceptionally well. Their mutual understanding fosters team success. When the captain and coach align, remarkable outcomes follow. They are in sync 99% of the time, which is why everything has fallen into place," he noted.
Mentorship Extending Beyond IPL
According to Shedge, what sets Ponting's mentorship apart is its continuity beyond the IPL season. The Australian icon remains engaged with his players, monitoring their domestic performances. "He keeps track of domestic tournaments and reaches out to me whenever necessary. If I encounter challenges, I can message him. Our conversations are ongoing," Shedge explained.
Preparation and Focus on Domestic Cricket
These small interactions, whether a congratulatory message or a piece of advice, hold significant value for a young cricketer navigating the pressures of growth. As IPL 2026 approaches, Shedge acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding his role, stating, "I can't specify right now. However, my primary goal is to win matches. Whatever role I assume, I will strive to fulfill it. Discussions with Shreyas bhai and Ricky sir will happen, but there’s still time. I believe I am well-prepared, having played several games last season, which has clarified my focus areas."
Despite the allure of the IPL and the influence of global icons like Ponting, Shedge remains grounded in domestic cricket. Having participated in the Ranji Trophy for the past few seasons, he feels his skills in red-ball cricket have matured. "I have been playing in the Ranji Trophy for the last 2-3 seasons, which has helped clarify my role. I know what I need to prepare for. When the Ranji Trophy returns next year, we will have better strategies, and I will be well-prepared to aim for the trophy," he stated.
A Journey of Learning and Team Culture
For Shedge, the journey is not merely about seeking headlines; it is about learning from the best, being ready for every opportunity, and contributing to a team culture founded on trust and shared goals.
