Suryansh Shedge Discusses Finishing Role and Insights from MS Dhoni Ahead of IPL 2025

Shedge's Insights on Finishing in Cricket

Suryansh Shedge, an all-rounder for Mumbai and Punjab Kings (PBKS), shared his experiences regarding discussions with cricket legend MS Dhoni during the previous Indian Premier League (IPL). He emphasized Dhoni's advice on the finisher's role, highlighting that failures are common in this position and that overthinking should be avoided. Shedge spoke to a sports media outlet as he prepares for the upcoming IPL season, which kicks off on March 31 against the Gujarat Titans, the 2022 champions.

Limited Opportunities and Staying Ready

Following a disappointing defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in last year's final, PBKS aims to rewrite their narrative. Shedge had limited playtime last season, participating in only three innings and accumulating just seven runs, with a top score of 5. His performance in other formats has been similarly modest, with 35 runs in two innings in the Ranji Trophy, 16 runs in one Vijay Hazare Trophy inning, and 60 runs in four innings during the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where his best score was 28.

Reflecting on his time on the bench, Shedge expressed a positive outlook, noting the competitive environment in the Mumbai team. He stated, "Everyone is vying for a spot, and my playing time is not solely in my control. What I can do is focus on improving my skills and staying prepared for when my chance comes."

Rising Star with Impressive Performances

Shedge gained recognition for his outstanding performances as a finisher and pace bowler during the 2024-25 SMAT season with Mumbai, scoring 131 runs in nine innings at a remarkable strike rate of over 251 and taking nine wickets. His standout moment was in the final, where he scored a rapid 36* off 15 balls, contributing significantly to Mumbai's successful chase of 176 runs with 13 balls remaining. Despite this success, he has faced challenges in maintaining consistent performance as a finisher.

Dhoni's Wisdom on the Finisher's Role

During IPL 2025, Shedge had valuable conversations with MS Dhoni regarding the finisher's responsibilities. He recounted Dhoni's insights, stating, "He mentioned that while the finisher's role is vital, opportunities are scarce, and outcomes often don't favor the player. My approach is to remain present and tackle the game one ball at a time."

Shedge further explained that senior players often emphasize that the scoreboard influences the strategy. He believes that staying focused and not overthinking is essential to anticipate the bowler's tactics and avoid mistakes. He remarked, "The T20 format is a significant contest, and taking your time to settle in is crucial. Each ball represents a new challenge, and winning those individual battles can ease the overall task and pressure the opposition."

Learning from Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting

Playing under Shreyas Iyer at PBKS, Shedge appreciates the strategic insights he gains from his teammate. He also considers the guidance of head coach Ricky Ponting, a multiple-time World Cup champion, as a tremendous advantage. Shedge noted, "Shreyas bhai has experience in various situations, and there's much to learn from him. Meanwhile, Ricky sir brings unmatched energy to practice sessions, motivating players even when they're not feeling their best."
