After Suruchi Singh's remarkable victory in mixed doubles shooting at the Asian Games, her mother, Sudesh, shared that the family initially envisioned her pursuing wrestling. However, a collarbone injury redirected her path to becoming a skilled pistol shooter.
Indian Shooters Excel at Asian Games
On a day filled with excitement, India's pistol shooters made a strong comeback, securing two medals. The trio of Rudrankksh Patil, Aishwary Pratap Tomar, and Niraj Kumar earned a silver medal in the men's 50 m rifle 3 positions team event. Meanwhile, the mixed doubles team of Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet achieved gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, marking India's second gold medal of the tournament. Suruchi and Kamaljeet amassed a total of 484.6 points in the final, surpassing South Korea, which took silver with 478.0 points. Iran secured the bronze with 415.8 points, while Indonesia was eliminated with a score of 349.4 points. Notably, the Indian duo also set a new Asian record, breaking the previous mark of 481.3 set by Uzbekistan earlier this year during the Asian Shooting Championships in New Delhi.
A Mother's Immense Joy
In an interview, Sudesh expressed her overwhelming happiness, stating, "Today is a day of immense joy because my daughter has won a medal. I am extremely happy. Words cannot describe this happiness; the girl worked incredibly hard, and we are all thrilled. You can see the joy on everyone's faces."
Sudesh mentioned that upon returning home from the airport, they would celebrate with drums and distribute sweets. "When Suruchi comes home, she loves Dal Churma and prefers it made with pure desi ghee. We keep cows, so she enjoys homemade ghee, which is her favorite," she added, sharing her daughter's favorite meal for her return.
A Journey Forged by Injury and Sacrifice
Reflecting on Suruchi's journey, Sudesh recounted how the family initially aimed for her to be a wrestler, but a collarbone injury changed their plans. Despite this setback, Suruchi remained determined to pursue sports, leading her father to leave his army career to support her and her younger brother in shooting. "We wanted her to be a wrestler, but after her collarbone injury, we shifted her focus to shooting. She practices tirelessly from morning until evening. Our family faces challenges, but Suruchi never wavered and worked incredibly hard," her mother recalled.
Sudesh shared, "Suruchi told her father, 'Papa, put me into a sport and make me a player.' So, he left his army job to enroll both Suruchi and her brother in shooting. Now, both siblings excel in the sport, and she is truly dedicated."
Finally, when asked if she had spoken to Suruchi, her mother replied, "Yes, I spoke with her briefly for a minute or two, and she was very happy."
