Surge in Goat Prices Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha Leaves Families Struggling
Dhubri Faces Unprecedented Goat Price Hike
Several premium and special breeds of goats have reportedly crossed the Rs one lakh mark, creating shock among prospective buyers.
Dhubri, May 27: In response to requests from various Muslim organizations and community groups in Dhubri, urging locals to refrain from cattle sacrifice during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, the local goat market has experienced an extraordinary rise in prices, making it difficult for many families to purchase sacrificial animals.
Residents and potential buyers in Dhubri have voiced their worries regarding what they term an “unusual and uncontrolled” surge in goat prices as the festival approaches.
Market reports indicate that goats previously priced around Rs 7,000 are now being sold for as much as Rs 15,000. Likewise, goats that typically cost around Rs 10,000 are now listed at Rs 22,000 to Rs 24,000, making them unaffordable for many families with limited incomes.
Moreover, several premium and special goat breeds have reportedly surpassed the Rs one lakh threshold, shocking many prospective buyers.
“We have never seen such a dramatic increase in goat prices in Dhubri. Those who budgeted for Eid based on last year's prices are now feeling helpless,” shared Shahjamal Hoque, a local resident.
Another buyer at a livestock market commented, “The sudden rise in demand for goats, following the decision to shift from cattle sacrifice, has led to these unrealistic prices. Average families cannot manage these costs.”
This price surge has also impacted the meat market, with several mutton vendors choosing to halt sales due to concerns over sudden price fluctuations and rising procurement costs.
A local meat trader stated, “The market has become unstable. Costs have risen sharply, making it impossible to sell at regular prices, and customers are reluctant to pay inflated rates.”
Many locals have called on authorities and relevant departments to oversee the market dynamics and prevent traders from taking advantage of the situation through excessive price hikes.
Social observers have noted that while community appeals aimed to foster harmony and sensitivity, they have inadvertently led to unexpected market inflation as the festivities draw near.
“Eid should embody faith, sacrifice, and community spirit — not a time of financial strain for ordinary individuals,” remarked Mridul Islam, a local resident.
