Suraj Mashi's Silver Medal Triumph

In an impressive show of grit, Suraj Mashi secured the silver medal in the men's 5000m race at the Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG), despite competing in borrowed spikes. Suraj is part of a group of tribal athletes who face financial constraints, making it difficult to afford regular coaching. Running is their primary skill, offering hope for a brighter future.

Challenges and Self-Training

"The monthly coaching fee is Rs 4000, which I cannot afford. I live in Nashik for my studies and have to manage rent, which I cover by participating in races across Maharashtra and Gujarat. Therefore, I train independently and seek guidance from experienced athletes or coaches from the Tribal department when needed," Suraj explained. He won the silver medal in the men's 5000m event at the Khelo India Tribal Games on Sunday. Instead of paying for coaching, he spends Rs 300 monthly to access training facilities and often trains in second-hand shoes. Due to the poor condition of his spikes, he had to borrow a pair from another runner for the competition.

A Tale of Resilience

Originating from a small village in Mokhada Taluka, Palghar district, Suraj's life is marked by resilience and independence. As the first son born to a daily wage laborer and four sisters, he has been self-reliant since joining a state-run Ashram Shala for education. His passion for running was ignited during a school sports event, providing stability amid life's challenges.

Tragedy struck when Suraj was in the 10th grade; his mother fell and injured her hip, leaving her unable to walk. Additionally, he lost one of his elder sisters last year, and his three younger brothers depend on him for support.

Balancing Aspirations and Responsibilities

After finishing school, Suraj relocated to Nashik to pursue higher education and sports ambitions, but managing living expenses while supporting his family has been a constant challenge. "I earn between Rs 3000 to Rs 5000 monthly from local competitions and cross-country races. I send whatever I can save to my father while also covering my education and training costs," said Suraj, who will celebrate his 19th birthday in June.

Aspirations for a Brighter Future

Upon turning 18, Suraj sought employment in the police department. Although he performed well in most physical tests, he was unable to meet the distance requirement in the Shot Put, which cost him the opportunity. Securing a job remains a priority for Suraj, but he is hopeful that his success at the Khelo India Tribal Games will bring about positive changes, noting that the Maharashtra government offers cash rewards for medallists in these games.
