Immediate Action Required in Himachal Pradesh

Shimla: The Supreme Court has issued a grave warning regarding the environmental crisis in Himachal Pradesh, stating that the state could potentially "disappear from the country's map" if immediate corrective measures are not implemented. This alarming statement has prompted Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena to convene an emergency meeting involving 14 critical departments to devise a response strategy.

The court emphasized the escalating effects of climate change and rampant development on the delicate Himalayan ecosystem, pointing out that natural disasters in the area are becoming increasingly frequent.

Supreme Court Stresses Environmental Protection

During the proceedings of the Pristine Hotel & Resorts Pvt Ltd vs. State of Himachal Pradesh case, a bench comprising Justice GV Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan transformed the discussion into a public interest litigation, expressing serious concerns over the rising incidents of landslides, flash floods, and ecological instability in the region.

“We want to make it clear to both the state and central governments that generating revenue cannot come at the expense of the environment and ecology. If this trend continues, it won't be long before Himachal Pradesh is erased from the map. We must take action now,” the bench remarked.

The Supreme Court has scheduled the next hearing for August 25, instructing the state to provide a comprehensive response detailing the measures being taken to mitigate further environmental harm.

Government's High-Level Meeting

In light of the Supreme Court's warning, Chief Secretary Saxena organized a high-level meeting on Thursday (August 7, 2025) with senior officials from various departments, including Urban Development, Revenue, Tourism, Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Disaster Management, Rural Development, NHAI, and the Pollution Control Board.

The objective is to collect actionable recommendations from each department to address the increasing frequency of natural disasters, which will inform the government's response to the Supreme Court.

Human Impact on Environmental Disasters

The Supreme Court firmly stated that the environmental degradation in Himachal is largely due to human activities, asserting that any development initiatives should only proceed after consultations with geologists, environmental specialists, and local communities. The court also reminded the central government of its duty to oversee ecologically sensitive areas like Himachal.

The registry has been instructed to register this matter as a public interest writ petition, indicating a significant change in the handling of such cases in the future.
