Supreme Court Urges Regulated Movement for Delhi Metro Amid CJP Protest
Supreme Court's Directive on Delhi Metro Services
New Delhi: On Friday, the Supreme Court instructed the central government and relevant authorities to ensure that the movement of Delhi Metro and trains is not entirely halted due to the upcoming CJP protest scheduled for October 10. The court emphasized that a complete shutdown is not acceptable.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, urged the government to facilitate services in a controlled manner to prevent any inconvenience to commuters.
The court highlighted the distinction between a total ban and the provision of services under regulated conditions.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that he would advocate for a reconsideration of the prohibition, allowing metro trains and railway services to operate in a suitably regulated manner to minimize public inconvenience, adhering to the principle of proportionality.
In light of this assurance, the court clarified that there should be no total ban on metro train operations.
Additionally, the bench instructed that the authorities should widely publicize their decisions regarding the regulated movement of metro trains and other railway services to reduce public inconvenience.
It also recommended that similar announcements be made concerning traffic movement in Delhi.
The bench further suggested that the barricading of roads be reassessed and that alternative routes be adequately publicized.
