Supreme Court to Review Allegations Against Rahul Gandhi Involving Pregnant Journalist
Supreme Court Takes Up Controversial Case
New Delhi: On Friday, the Supreme Court agreed to consider a petition alleging that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi physically pushed a pregnant journalist during a demonstration at the court on October 12.
The application was presented to a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, who indicated that the hearing would take place on either October 26 or 27.
Senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia, who brought the matter to the court's attention, stated that the application is part of an ongoing case.
Bhatia claimed, "A female journalist was assaulted on the court grounds."
The Supreme Court had previously addressed a series of petitions concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, protests in Delhi, the October 12 march, and reported assaults on journalists and lawyers.
The court had also ordered that no punitive measures be taken against a female journalist who faced allegations from a Delhi Police officer regarding casteist comments and public humiliation during a protest at Jantar Mantar.
During the Thursday session, Bhatia urged the bench to also investigate the incident involving the pregnant journalist, who he asserted was pushed by Rahul Gandhi on the Supreme Court premises.
He emphasized, "A lady journalist was pushed by Rahul Gandhi in the Supreme Court precincts. She was three months pregnant and required hospitalization," urging the court to take notice of the situation.
The bench instructed Bhatia to submit a formal petition regarding this issue, indicating they would review it.
On October 12, Gandhi, along with several key opposition figures and their supporters, arrived at the Supreme Court to file a petition concerning alleged widespread voter deletions and irregularities in the SIR process.
The capital has seen numerous protests calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar due to alleged discrepancies in the SIR process.
The Supreme Court issued notices to Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, the Congress party, and others regarding a petition against the October 12 march.
