Supreme Court Update on Air India Flight Investigation

New Delhi, July 28 - The government informed the Supreme Court on Tuesday that the final draft report from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) regarding the Air India flight incident in Ahmedabad, which occurred in June 2025, will be submitted to the court in a sealed envelope during the first week of October. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohan, acknowledged the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta's arguments that the Federation of Indian Pilots could provide suggestions to the AAIB, which may be considered if deemed necessary during the investigation.

During a brief hearing, the Solicitor General informed the bench that four simulation tests had been conducted based on a request made in an application filed by one of the petitioners.

The legal officer stated that the final draft report would be presented to the bench in a sealed envelope. The court was hearing petitions filed by an NGO, a law student, and the father of the deceased pilot, all requesting an independent investigation under judicial supervision.

The bench has scheduled the next hearing for these petitions on October 13. Recently, the AAIB informed the Supreme Court that the final draft report on the investigation into the Ahmedabad plane crash is expected to be ready by October this year. The tragic incident on June 12, 2025, involved the AI-171 flight (Boeing 787-8) en route from Ahmedabad to London, resulting in the loss of 260 lives.
