Supreme Court's Upcoming Hearing on Ethanol Petrol Petition

The Supreme Court is set to review a petition on Monday that challenges the nationwide implementation of 20% ethanol-blended petrol (EBP-20). The petition claims that millions of vehicle owners are being compelled to use fuel that is incompatible with their vehicles.

This public interest litigation is scheduled for hearing on September 1 before a bench led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai. The petition, filed by advocate Akshay Malhotra, requests the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to ensure that ethanol-free petrol is available at all petrol stations.

Additionally, the petition seeks to mandate that all petrol pumps and distribution units display labels indicating the ethanol content, allowing consumers to be fully informed. It also calls for consumers to be notified about their vehicles' compatibility with ethanol when refueling.
