Supreme Court's Decision on Justice Verma's Case
The Supreme Court announced on Wednesday that it will establish a special bench to hear the petition filed by Justice Yashwant Verma. He is seeking to invalidate the report from an internal inquiry committee that found him guilty of misconduct in a cash recovery case. Chief Justice B.R. Gavai informed senior advocate Kapil Sibal that a bench must be formed for this matter. Sibal had brought the case to the Chief Justice's attention. The Chief Justice is presiding over a bench that also includes Justices K. Vinod Chandran and Joymalya Bagchi.
Justice Verma has also requested the annulment of a recommendation made by then Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna on May 8, which urged Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against him. A panel of three judges, led by Chief Justice Shil Nagu of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, conducted a ten-day investigation, questioning 55 witnesses and visiting the site of a fire that broke out at Justice Verma's official residence around 11:35 PM on March 14. At that time, Justice Verma was a judge of the Delhi High Court and is currently serving as a judge at the Allahabad High Court.
