Supreme Court Set to Welcome Three New Judges Following Presidential Approval

New Appointments in the Supreme Court
Following the endorsement of the collegium's recommendations by the President, the central government is expected to issue a notification for the appointment of three new judges to the Supreme Court. It is anticipated that Chief Justice of India, Bhushan R. Gavai, will administer the oath to these judges on Friday morning. The files related to these appointments reached President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday and have now received her approval. The Ministry of Law is likely to release the formal notification soon, completing the process initiated by the Supreme Court collegium.
Significance of the Appointments
This development marks a significant moment for the judiciary, occurring just three days after the collegium's recommendation. The swift action is viewed as a positive start to Chief Justice Gavai's tenure, which began earlier this month. The three judges slated for promotion include Justice N.V. Anjaria, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, originally from the Gujarat High Court; Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court, originally from the Rajasthan High Court; and Justice A.S. Chandurkar, a judge of the Bombay High Court. With these appointments, the Supreme Court will reach its sanctioned strength of 34 judges.
Composition of the Collegium
The collegium consists of the five most senior judges of the Supreme Court. In addition to Chief Justice Gavai, the members include Justices Suryakant, Vikram Nath, J.K. Maheshwari, and B.V. Nagarathna. During their meeting on May 26, 2025, the collegium recommended the promotion of these three judges.
