Supreme Court Revokes Olympic Wrestler Sushil Kumar's Bail in Murder Case
Supreme Court's Decision on Sushil Kumar's Bail
The Supreme Court has annulled the bail granted to Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar in connection with the murder case of wrestler Sagar Dhankhar, which took place at the Chhatrasal Stadium in the national capital.
A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra overturned the Delhi High Court's order from March 4 that had allowed Kumar to be released on bail. Kumar has been instructed to surrender within a week.
This ruling from the Supreme Court follows an appeal filed by Sagar Dhankhar's father, Ashok Dhankhar, challenging the High Court's decision to grant bail to Kumar. Kumar and others are accused of launching a fatal attack on Dhankhar in May 2021, allegedly over a property dispute.
During the incident, two of Dhankhar's friends were also injured. According to the post-mortem report, Dhankhar suffered severe brain injuries due to blunt force trauma.
Kumar was arrested in May 2021, and a sessions court had previously granted him a week of interim bail for a knee surgery scheduled for July 19, 2023.
In October 2022, a subordinate court framed charges against Kumar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing unrest with a deadly weapon. The court noted that Dhankhar was brutally attacked with a baseball bat and hockey stick after being abducted and brought to the stadium.
