Supreme Court Raises Concerns Over Illegal Immigration and National Security
Supreme Court's Stance on Welfare Resources and Immigration
Highlighting the strain on limited welfare resources, the Chief Justice questioned whether impoverished children are not entitled to these benefits. He pondered if the law needs to be stretched excessively. The bench also emphasized security issues related to illegal immigration, particularly along India's northern borders. The Chief Justice pointed out the extreme sensitivity of our borders in North India, questioning whether it is our responsibility to retain any infiltrators who enter illegally. These remarks were made during the hearing of a petition alleging the disappearance of Rohingyas.
Legal Arguments and Court Proceedings
However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta challenged the fundamental basis of the petition, arguing that it was filed by someone without the right to raise such issues. He stated that a public interest litigant, who has no connection to the Rohingyas, is making these requests. He urged the court not to consider this petition. After a brief hearing of the parties involved, the bench postponed the case, indicating it would revisit the matter on December 16.
