Union Government's Stance on Yemen Execution

The Supreme Court has been informed by the Union government that it has limited options to intervene in the case of Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya, who faces execution in Yemen, reportedly set for Wednesday.

Attorney General R Venkataramani explained to the court that due to Yemen's sensitive political situation, which lacks diplomatic recognition, the matter of 'blood money' is a private negotiation.

Background on Nimisha Priya's Case

Nimisha Priya, originally from Palakkad in Kerala, has been imprisoned in Yemen since July 2017 for the alleged murder of Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mehdi. In 2020, she received a death sentence from a trial court in Sanaa, Yemen. Recent reports indicated that Rashad al-Alimi, the head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, has approved her execution.

India-China Relations Discussed

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stated that the relationship between India and China is 'steadily improving' and emphasized the need for continued normalization of ties during his visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation foreign ministers’ meeting.

In discussions with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, Jaishankar noted the positive reception of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in India and expressed that ongoing normalization could yield mutually beneficial results.

Cartoonist's Controversial Post

Hemant Malviya, a cartoonist from Indore, has consented to remove a social media post that depicted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in a manner deemed 'undignified.'

The Madhya Pradesh High Court previously denied Malviya anticipatory bail, stating he had exceeded the boundaries of free speech. Following criticism from the Supreme Court regarding the inflammatory nature of his post, Malviya agreed to amend his original caricature.

Omar Abdullah's Tribute to Martyrs

Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, scaled the fence of Srinagar’s Martyrs’ cemetery to honor the 22 civilians killed by forces under Dogra ruler Hari Singh in 1931. This act followed police restrictions that confined political leaders, including Abdullah, to their homes to prevent them from attending the cemetery on Kashmir Martyrs’ Day.

Abdullah accused the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of issuing these restrictions, stating that unelected officials were suppressing elected representatives of Jammu and Kashmir.

New Appointments in Governance

President Droupadi Murmu has appointed new governors for Haryana and Goa, along with a new lieutenant governor for Ladakh. Kavinder Gupta, the former deputy chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, will assume the role of lieutenant governor of Ladakh.

Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, a leader from the Telugu Desam Party, has been designated as the governor of Goa, while Ashim Kumar Ghosh has been appointed as the governor of Haryana.
